Chapter Eighteen

Bennett

It had been a slow day at work. Neal and I had been out on patrol on Lake Union most of the day. Things were still tense at headquarters—no one had mentioned what Harris and Rodriguez had seen, but it was clear that everyone knew.

Neal had just shaken his head at me and said, “Dude, I told you not to come out. Too much drama.”

Even after I explained to him that I hadn’t really had a choice, he just scoffed and said nothing. We hadn’t pulled much of anything except a couple of drunk boaters and an illegal campsite on one of the islands that morning, so we docked early. We could wait out the rest of our shift in the lounge, waiting for any calls.

The call that came wasn’t one I’d been expecting. When my cell phone rang in my pocket, I thought it might be Rory trying to get me to spill my plans for our date. I kept telling him there really wasn’t a plan, but it drove the guy crazy that I still wouldn’t tell him anything.

However, when I looked at the screen, I saw that it was Addison and frowned. She’d had a tutoring session at school that afternoon and it was about time for her mother to be picking her up. I wondered if maybe Jessie had forgotten.

I tapped the screen to accept the call. “Hey, Addy, what’s—”

“Daaaddy!” Her voice came out in a scream that ended on a long wail, and she was sobbing.

My heart stopped, thumped painfully, and started again. I sat forward and held the phone closer to my mouth, as if that would get me closer to her. “Addison, what’s happening?” Neal looked at me sharply, understanding from my tone that something was wrong.

“I-I…parking lot…I…waiting…for mom…” She could barely squeeze out words in between her choking sobs and gulps for air. Her voice was shaky, and I couldn’t tell if she was afraid for herself or someone else.

“Addison, I need you to take a deep breath and try to answer me. Is someone hurting you?”

“N-n-no. I’m o-okay…” She took a big breath. “Mr.Donovanishurtreallybad.”

My heart squeezed in a vise. She’d slurred all her words together, so I hoped to God I didn’t hear what I thought I’d heard. “I need you to try again, honey. Go slow.” It was all I could do to school my voice so she couldn’t hear the panic. The only relief I had was that my daughter didn’t seem to be hurt.

“Mr. Donovan…he’s hurt really bad. I came out here to wait for mom, and I saw something. I thought it was him so I went to say good-bye…but there was this man and he was kicking him. I screamed and he ran away, but…Dad, it’s really bad.”

I was the one trembling after that. I stood up and started heading for my truck. I covered my phone and looked over at Neal. “Something’s gone down at the school. We need cops and medics like yesterday. Call it in!”

He nodded, and I didn’t wait to hear him make the call.
